About Chiang Mai, northern Thailand

The Culture
Chiang Mai, located in the cooler countryside regions of northern Thailand has a lot to offer to the traveller in search of leisurely sight-seeing and adventure vacations.
Or to those retirees in search of a retirement home or second home away from the madding crowd, then this beautiful tropical haven might be just the place for you.
The people of Chiang Mai are friendly and accepting. They invite you to partake in most any activities they are engaged in, from weddings, parties, streetside dining, to funerals and you’re always welcome as long as one acts respectfully and politely.
And the food is of course cheap and a delightful culinary experience, as Anthony Bourdain would attest!

Climate
The start of the rainy season is a great time to visit Chiang Mai. Everything looks green and the air fresh and invigorating after a little rain. It doesn’t rain very heavily in Chiang Mai, coming and going quickly enough, and the days are not too hot. This is the time when beautiful wild flowers bloom – a great time for trekking or visiting the hills and mountains, which is the main tour program for visitors to Chiang Mai.

Getting around Chiang Mai is simple enough – by public or private transport.
There are two categories of public transport, namely the tuk-tuks and Songthaews.

The tuk-tuk is a three-wheeled, window-less hybrid between a scooter and a taxi. Painted in bright red, blue or green these vehicles are easily identified and are found all over the city.
Tuk-tuks are convenient and inexpensive. A normal ride should cost about 40฿ to 60฿ (Thai baht), while a longer ride should not cost more than 100baht anywhere in the city.

Note that tuk-tuks parked outside shops and hotels are usually less flexible on price. The solution would be avoid too much haggling and to walk away and flag down a passing tuk-tuk.
Remember:  The fare must be negotiated first, so make sure that you bargain and agree on a price before setting off.
The main disadvantage with riding a tuk-tuk is that breathing in the exhausts emitted by  vehicles on the roads is unavoidable.

Songthaews  are covered, long-bed trucks, outfitted with seats to carry passengers. The Red Songthaews are cheaper than tuk-tuks, costing 15฿ to go anywhere in the city.  But because they pick up and drop off as they go, direct transportation to a destination may not be an option, unless you engage the driver for that specific purpose and agree to the rate beforehand.
There are also yellow, white, green and blue songthaews. The different colours indicate the different outlying areas of Chiang Mai that these songthaews travel to.

If you’re not in any hurry, the Samlor is a novel way of cruising the streets of the old city and will travel your way for about the same fare as a tuk-tuk. They are nice for short tours of wats (temples) and places of interest.
Private transport
Commonly, you may rent a self-drive car, hire a car with driver or rent a motorbike.
There are motorbikes for rent in many areas around town. Just follow the signs.
Note that in Thailand you drive on the left hand side of the road.

Beth Haworth, former Disney

At Disney World there’s so much to see and do and experience – you could spend a month at each park and still not get to it all.

In a late Spring afternoon, imagine two families departed for Disney World. They were very much alike, these two families. Both had two children, both had middle class incomes, and both lived in the same neighborhood.
Both families took the same flight to Disney World. Both stayed at the same luxury 5-Star Disney World resort. Both families attended the same shows and events, and ate at the same restaurants. Both families spent the same amount of time at Disney World, and returned home on the same flight.
But there was a difference….
One family spent $5,500 for their Disney World vacation. The other spent $2,700.
What made the difference?
Written by a former Disney Cast Member and best selling travel writer, The Ultimate Disney World Savings Guide will help you learn how to literally save hundreds of dollars and get the most you possibly can for your money.

Seychelles Visitors Guide

The Seychelles are a world of beaches and luxuriant tropical life set at the gateway to the Indian Ocean. Dreamlike and stunningly beautiful, the 115 islands that make up the Seychelles are actually made of coral. The palm forests are, in real life, more lush and dazzling than the scores of travel magazines that feature the Seychelles as the perfect tropical destination for vacations. The waters around the Seychelles are crystal clear and sparkling, better than anywhere else on earth. Snorkelling here will give you a picture-perfect glimpse into the underwater world of marine life, which is as abundant and varied as anywhere else on the globe.

Planning a holiday in the Seychelles
Paradise will cost you, and the Seychelles are no exception. Before you go, do some research about the islands, activities, places to stay, and things to do. A little planning will go a long way in making the most of your trip, and you will absolutely get your money's worth during your visit to paradise. Be sure to include in your plans side trips to some of the smaller islands, and do some snorkelling or scuba diving. Visit the National Parks, do some hiking or trekking, go bird-watching or go fishing.

The Seychelles Islands
There are over one hundred islands in the Seychelles, but only a few of them are inhabited by people. The main island is Mahe, which is where the capitol city of Victoria is located, as well as most tourist accommodations and services. On whatever island you find yourself booking a hotel, you will definitely want to explore some of the other islands that make up the Seychelles archipelago. Almost every island has some sort of endemic species living on it, most likely a bird. There are giant tortoises here, a well as other exotic animals such as the flying fox (really a fruit bat). The insects are something that will amaze you as well, including whip scorpions, giant millipedes, rhinoceros beetles, giant tenebrionid beetles, and palm spiders. But don't get scared off from visiting the various islands: none are life threatening!
There are also dozens of endemic plants in the Seychelles, although Virgin forests exist only on Mahe and Silhouette Island, and on Praslin. One rare and fantastic plant to watch for is the pitcher plant, which feeds on insects!

National Parks on the Islands & Main Attractions

Curieuse Marine National Park             -- giant tortoises
Aldabra Marine Reserve                      -- tidal lagoon
Morne Seychellois National Park         -- glacis habitats
Aride Island Marine Nature Reserve   -- marine turtles
Praslin National Park                            -- coco de mer
Cousin Island Secial Reserve             -- hawksbill turtles
Ste Anne Marine National Park            -- coral reef

Things to do in the Seychelles
For nature lovers
The Seychelles is the perfect vacation destination for lots of activities, but travelers who are interested in nature and the environment will be especially excited with all that this nation has to offer. The variety and splendor of the wild birds alone is spectacular, and you could spend weeks here, just observing the wild birds who come to roost on the various islands in the Seychelles archipelago. The tropical fish are of course wonderful as well, and snorkelers and divers alike consider the Seychelles a top destination for both activities. They Seychelles were not "discovered" by humans until relatively recently, which means there were no ships bringing foreign seeds and species to the islands, and development was delayed. This means that many of the species on the islands of the Seychelles are endemic. That means they evolved here, according to the specific local conditions, and are found nowhere else on earth! Many of the species are rare, and some are even extinct these days.

For Arts lovers
The arts are alive and well in the Seychelles Islands, and you can find plenty of evidence that the arts are important to the local residents, and to the Seychelloise government. There are plenty of funded arts groups, as well as artists who specialize in creating Seycehlles-inspired fiction, poetry, art, and music. Since the dominant traditional culture here is heavily African-influenced, you'll find an African flavor in almost every artistic creation on these islands.

The beautiful tropical locale and easy pace of life in the Seychelles attracts artists to the islands, and many come, set up shop, and sell beautiful arts, crafts, and all sorts of souvenirs. There is lots of great talent here, and you can take home a unique and lovely souvenir quite easily by perusing gift shops and boutiques. Look for paintings, sculpture, collages if you're into serious art. Around the capitol, Victoria, you can see lovely statues creatd by local artisans, too.

Music and Dance in the Seychelles Islands bring together a wonderful blend of African, Chinese, Arabic, and European instruments and traditions. You'll find diverse instruments used in Seychelloise music: banjo, accordian, African drums, violins, and unusual instruments like the makalapo, the zez, and the bom. There are itinerant bands that go around the islands playing traditional music, often accompanied by traditional dancers. They sometimes visit the larger hotels on the main islands. One traditional dance incorporates African tradition. It's the moutia, with strong rhythms and danced around a fire, chanting prayers. Look for sega dances, too.

Recommended things to do:
  • Visit Cousin Island for an Aviarian Experience
  • Escape to the Botanical Gardens on Mahe
  • Relax in La Digue
  • Rent a Yacht out of Victoria
  • Dig into the Sand at Beau Vallon
  • Go Trekking in the Morne Seychellois National Park
  • Hike to Kopolia Peak

Praslin, Seychelles

The Seychelles Islands can be divided into several groups of islands, by geography. One such grouping of islands includes Praslin. Praslin is located northeast of Mahe, and is surrounded by these smaller islands:
Cousin Island
Aride Island
Curieuse Island

Praslin is the perfect tropical island, since it's not over-developed but has some tourism activity for visitors. The topography and environment are lush, green, and picture-perfect tropical island vegeation and scenery. The overall flavor of the island's culture is relaxed and peaceful. It's made of granite and has a spine of mountains running down its center. Praslin is about seven and a half miles long by three miles wide, which makes it the second-largest island of the Seychelles Islands.

Most people visit Praslin to see Valle de Mai, which is a preserved area of forest where coco de mer palms are abundant. This is a major attraction of the Seychelles Islands because there only a few places in the world where this particular palm grows wild. The other main attraction of Praslin of course is the beaches.

About 5000 people live on Praslin full time, in small villages scattered all over the island. Some of these settlements are:
Anse Volbert
Grand Anse
Baie Ste Anne
Petit Anse Kerlan
Anse Marie-Louise
Anse Ste Sauveur
Anse Consolation
Anse Boise de Rose

Praslin has two tourist information offices, which can help travelers out with anything from accommodations to maps. These are the Airport Tourist Office and Baie St Anne Tourist Office. There are also several travel agencies on Praslin, most of them located at Grand Anse. The main post office is located here as well. There are banks with ATMs too, and again Grand Anse is the best area to find this and other tourist services.

To get around Praslin, you have some choices. You can rent a car or rent a bicycle. Alternatively, you can make use of their excellent bus service, or spend more and use their taxis. To get to Curieuse or the other nearby islands, you have to charter a boat, which is done through your hotel.

Shopping & Entertainment
There's an art gallery in Anse Volbert, called George Camille Art Gallery. Camille uses island motifs such as palms and geckos in his art, making for superb gifts and upscale souvenirs.
Grand Anse and Baie Ste Anne have the only real nightlife, which seems to run only on Saturday nights. In Grand Anse you can visit Jungle and dance all you want, or if your tastes run more glam and flashy, visit Dome on Baie Ste Anne.

Valle de Mai
Valle de Mai is on the list of World Heritage Sites because of the rare coco de mer palm tree. This type of palm grows in the wild only here and on nearby Curieuse Island. Your entry fee to the park goes towards preserving the area, which is a gem-like slice of paradise that everone from artists to wildlife enthusiasts consider to be one of the best spots on earth for experiencing tropical perfection. There's a black parrot that lives only here on Praslin, whose habitat is preserved by the park's existence.
Visitors to Valle de Mai should keep to the trails, of which there are three. You can enjoy the park for hours on end, via these trails, one of which takes several hours to traverse.

Climate
There are seasons in the Seychelles, and these depend largely on the trade winds that come bringing either warmer, wetter air or cooler, drier air. From October to Spring time its warm and wetter, and the rest of the year tradewinds from the southeast bring the cooler air and higher wind speeds. This is the windy season, so waves on the ocean are higher, and beaches are whippy and windy. There are periods in Spring and Fall (March and October, respectively) when seas are calm, and this is a great time to visit the Seychelles, for some people. The highest rainfall will be around the islands of the Seychelles which have the highest elevations...in other words, the most mountainous islands have more rain. In Seychelles, this means Mahe and Silhouette.

When to go
The best time to visit the Seychelles is anytime! But if you have specific outdoor pursuits you want to explore while you're here, and you want to minimize the chances of being cancelled out by the wrong type of weather, here's a rough guide to the weather around the year. January sees the most rain, and July and August see the least amount of rainfall. The temperature and humidity are relatively stable year-round, hovering between 75 F and 90 F, and humidity around 80%.
During the months between December and March, including December and March, you are more likely to encounter grayer, windier days due to cyclone activity elsewhere in the Indian Ocean. Nevertheless, this is one of the two peak seasons for traveling to the Seychelles, along with June and July.
